MoonlightROBBERY is a tenant-led campaign, to end both Government robbery from council tenants’ rents, and the massive shortfall in the funding of the management, maintenance and repairs to council tenants' homes.
The allowances set by Government for councils’ spending on management and maintenance (M&M) and major repairs (MRA) currently fall short (nationally) by £2.35 billion a year - based on the Government’s own research on the funding needed .
At the same time council tenants will pay this year £1.7 billion more in rent than councils are allowed to spend from the assumed rents on the upkeep of their homes (the very things council tenants assume their rents are for).
If all of council tenants’ rents were used to pay for the upkeep their homes, the £1.7 billion 'robbed' would cover almost three quarters of the £2.35 billion shortfall.
This ‘robbery’ of tenants’ rents has totalled around £17 billion since 1997, when this Government came into power.
